Punchy, panicky and unpredictable, Jeremy Saulnier's survivalist thriller breathes life into a tired genre.
The film serves up shaky protagonists in the form of deadbeat kids who haven't a clue how to handle weapons or react appropriately in the face of terror.
This adds a realist aesthetic which works wonders for both suspense and surprise, but only once you're willing to let slide the fact that these punks only have one (quickly confiscated) cell phone between them.
Devastating deaths take place in the dark, grisly prosthetics stand in for the usual cop-out CGI and Saulnier works hard to keep his audience equally as confused as his characters in peril. The best monsters are men and the greatest fear is uncertainty.
