Review of Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) by Brad G — 27 Jul 2009
Well not as good as last yearâ??s Wonder Woman animated feature or Justice League: New Frontier and light years away in quality from Batman: The Animated Series, there is still plenty to like about GLâ??s first feature.
The film starts off a little awkward with a rushed origin taleâ??bing, bang, boom Test Pilot Hal Jordan gets the Ring and joins the Green Lantern Corps. But I love how he leaves Earth very early on and that this is a Space/Sci-Fi story.
Its aliens, cantinas, and scum & villainy. The voice work is tip-top with Christopher Meloni and Victor Garber are perfect for GL and Sinestro, but I also love Michael Madsen as Kilowog and it was nice to hear from Kurtwood Smith, John Larroquette, and Larry Drake.
I found some of the minor profanity distracting at time and I wish the Sinestro reveal came earlier cuz itâ??s so gosh darn obvious. Some of the designs leave something to be desired. Funny colors and bumpy heads a la Star Trek TNG.
But whereas the New Frontier and Wonder Woman movies felt self-contained, this flick feels like more are on the way--Sinestro Corps anyone? VF.
