Hal Jordan is a test pilot who is bestowed with the power ring of Abin Sur, a dead alien, and inducted into the Green Lantern Corps, a large intergalactic police force. His first mission is to find intergalactic warlord, Kanjar Ro, and stop him before he creates weapons which can destroy the Green Lantern Corps. Sinestro, the greatest Green Lantern of them all, has other plans though...
The characters do develop well. Hal develops into the greatest Green Lantern of them all, Sinestro develops from the greatesr Green Lantern to the greatest Green Lantern enemy, and Kilowog develops to becoming a great ally for Hal Jordan. It does seem like a stretch that Hal would instantly know how to use the power ring, without any guidance or help.
The story develops quite well, giving us a few twists which do not feel tacked on. Sinestro's turn to the yellow side feels well developed, with his distaste for the Guardians and their way being clearly noted in earlier scenes. And the way thwy describe the Green Lanterns weakness against the colour yellow will give you a clear and understanding idea as to why such strong intergalactic police force cannot defeat a colour.
The voice work here is quite brilliant, with my favourite of the lot being Michael Masden's rendition of Kilowog, trainer of the Green Lanterns.
This film boasts some great animation work, blending a mix of hand drawn and computer generated images, which makes for an impressive visual treat.
This film does go to some dark places, with a few scenes of graphic violence that prove that just because this film is animated does not mean it is a kiddies film. One powerful scene is late in the movie, and it involves rings falling from the sky.
Apart from Batman and Superman, DC has not had much luck with any other of their superheroes, whom have fared better in animated films. So even if this summers Green Lantern movie is utter rubbish, at least we have this wonderful rendition of DC's Emerald Knight.
