Review of Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) by Ronnie L — 28 Feb 2012
I rather enjoyed Green Lantern: First Flight. As a GL fan who found the live action film entertaining but lacking in substance, this take on Hal Jordan's origins was a much more satisfying experience.
Wasting little time, it plays out like a buddy cop movie between Hal, voiced by Christopher Meloni, the first human ever to become a Green Lantern, and Sinestro, voiced by Victor Garber, the Corps' arrogant shining star.
When the Guardians of the Universe, who lead the Green Lanterns, fear that criminal Warlord Kenjar-Ro (Kurtwood Smith) has found a way to weaponize the yellow energy of fear, leading to an interstellar chase by Jordan, Sinestro, and familiar corps members like Tomar Re and Kilowog (voiced by Jon Larroquette and Michael Madsen, respectively).
The movie is a thrilling journey that puts the major themes and characterizations of the comics center stage, and although the movies short running time doesn't provide for all the character development one would like out of an origin story, the film is a both a worthy introduction for newcomers and a good story for established fans.
