Review of Green Lantern: First Flight (2009) by Eric C — 12 Dec 2009

The writers and producers of the popular DCAU have come together again to finally bring to DVD the origin tale of Green Lantern, one of the most powerful of all DC Heroes.

Many versions of Green Lantern's have been made, but many comic book fans agree that Hal Jordan is the bet one, he not only was the first human to wear the ring, but his story has always been complex.

In Justice League: The New Frontier we are given a great origin story, while David Boreanaz graced us as the voice of Hal Jordan and did the character a great justice.

In this film the writers have decided to retell the origin in a much broader way, with Christopher Meloni taking over as the voice of Hal Jordan. I am a bit disappointed that the producers didn't decide to just continue the story from where New Frontier left off, in terms of Hal's story. They could have had a recap of his origin in still, during the opening credits. Unfortunately they didn't.

I marked this at 80% because all in all its a great film. It has great animation and the voice acting is especially well done. Sinestro is played well by Victor Garber. He's a great continuation from the guy who voiced him the DCAU. The films made by DC Animation tend to be too short, not giving enough time to tell a well made story. Here we still get a well made story, but it goes by too quick.

The films are rated PG-13, which means their target audience are teenagers to adults and their attention spans can be longer than 70 minutes. The score for this film is subtle, but okay. Many scenes we can gear the score creeping up slowly until it gets up there in sound.

The character design are great; I love how the color scheme is with the Green Lantern's, Sinestro's Yellow is a bit of a letdown though, as his skin is extremely dark redish purple like.

I figure like this, David Boreanaz did a terrific job doing the voice of Hal Jordan, so why did they change it? Christopher Meloni is a good Hal Jordan, but not as good as Boreanaz. I'd say watch that film and than this film and do comparisons.

The story structure is decent, we get to meet the character, he gets his power, than is trained, than is betrayed. Simple and cliched, but hey its on 70 minutes.

I only got the 1 disc DVD, so I can't comment on the 2 Disc DVD edition, but the Blackest Night features, makes me want to read that series a lot.
