Review of Green Lantern: Emerald Knights (2011) by Dwain P — 19 Jun 2011
"Green Lantern: Emerald Knights" captures two vital elements of the best GL stories: epic scope and human drama about willpower and tenacity. In so doing, it achieves far greater emotional resonance than does the live-action movie and is, therefore, significantly more satisfying.
"Emerald Knights" is an interconnected series of stories about the Corps' history and the backgrounds of key Corps members as related by Hal Jordan to a new recruit as the Corps anticipates a major attack.
The stories are all solid, though the Abin Sur story featuring Atrocitus was surprisingly not as compelling as I would have thought. Similarly, the core narrative about the threat to Oa is a bit by-the-numbers until Mogo shows up, a geek moment I would have paid double to see in the live-action film.
In short, "Emerald Knights" is a well-written, well-executed action piece that earns its PG-13 rating. It is definitely not for the really young kids.
