Review of Green Lantern (2011) by Alex M — 13 Jun 2013
I don't think Green Lantern is a terrible movie by any means - it just wastes its potential. With superhero movies coming out every couple of months, Green Lantern just doesn't stand out like the rest; parts feel rushed, characters are underdeveloped, and the action is never quite as amazing as you would think it would be.
I thought Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively did a nice and convincing job even with the lackluster script, which really squanders any emotion that is supposed to be felt by the audience. Even the flashbacks toward the beginning that serve mainly as a back story feel odd and almost out of place.
I know there's potential here for a great movie, but introductions are either too brief or too awkward to really make a great impression. But I still definitely had my fun with what the movie gave me, and the final battle was suitably epic - even if it still was a little weak in comparison to the grand finales of Marvel superhero movies.
I can see why critics really disliked this, but it's hardly unbearable - just mediocre and disappointing considering what it could have been.
