Review of Green Card (1990) by Paul C — 07 Jul 2008
Peter Weir set his sights on mainstream and crafted one of the rarest things of all, a good romantic comedy. Unlike the vast majority of romantic comedies, both the romance and the comedy are genuine, so anyone looking for something to hold them over till Ashton Kutcher's next release need not apply--this is a "chick flick" that is so solidly crafted it manages to succeed on more levels than just that, and certainly does not rely on the moronic plot contrivances that more recent romances have.
Weir does not sacrifice authenticity for a chintzy ending, instead he leaves us with a wonderful and bittersweet moment.
