Review of Green Card (1990) by Katerina C — 22 May 2009
Brontë (Andie McDowell) has agreed to go into an arranged marriage with George (Gerard Departieu), a frenshman she has never met before, so she can get her dream apartment and George will get a green card. But they will undergo an investigation of the authorities before everything will be set, which mean that Brontë have to meet Georges and learn some basic things the authorities will ask one about the other. Brontë finally meets Georges and they live together some days, and the cultural clash that occurs between them is hilarious. Brontë is very reserved, healthy, vegetarian, active member in several ecological organisations who lives for her flower garden in her new apartment. While Georges is a passionate frenshman who loves good wine, and greasy food, and doesn´t give a damn about environmental questions, and many will upcome.
Andie McDowell isn´t quite a person you usually laugh at in movies, but the things you will laugh at in this movie is her reactions, and face expressions towards her slobish "husband". Gerard is amazingly funny in this movie, and there are some "classic" scenes like George playing his african compositions, shooting elephants and "Im her husband!", that you won´t forget. The old cliché, they of course fall in love when being separated is such a drag, though. But otherwise this is a very funny above-average comedy which I recommend strongly.
