Review of Greedy Lying Bastards (2013) by Ad S — 08 Mar 2013
In a sane society, this film would be part of school curricula, being shown by civic groups and at libraries, and would be on the tip of everyone's tongues. On the other hand, if society were sane the film would never have been made.
Our tools for measuring economic performance (GDP) leave out so much and yet we think what is 'measured' matters the most. "Extrernalities" from our economic activity, like carbon pollution and damage to ecosystems, are simply not being counted.
Those profiting from that damage -- the externalities like carbon and other pollution driving climate change -- are spending a fraction of their profits to create confusion in the American and global public about scientific reality.
This documentary powerfully mixes images and people's recounting from climate disruption driven (okay, influenced ...) 'natural disasters', scientist discussion of basic science about climate change, and laying out clearly those who are sowing deceit in the pursuit of near term profits -- with utter disregard for (one might even say 'criminally negligent' approaches to) the nation's and humanity's future prospects.
NOTE: Saw this documentary prior to release and writing a review of it for publication.
