Review of Great Expectations (2012) by Barry Thomas A — 08 Dec 2012
This is pretty much an extended version that was shown as a three part series late December, 2011, but with more money spent on its making, which means London looks even more realistic for the day, capturing every sight, sound, and you have to imagine the smells.
Also, Miss Haversham was more faithfully portrayed by her real age for the very first time, which was mid forties, and it was Gillian Anderson, who played the roll of Miss Haversham.
The big screen adaptation, also has the BBC's name attached to it, hence the similarity to the Television series a year earlier. This time, Helena Bonham Carter plays the part of Miss Haversham, again in her mid forties.
I am quite surprised that this is on the cinema a year after the Television series, but then this has happened several times in the past where a successful TV series has been turned into film soon after the series has ended, and at times the films, although similar to the TV series, have come off worse, that's because the series, if watched back to back, can take several hours, and several hours cannot be done in one film.
The big screen adaptation, although worth watching, also has a shorter run time compared to the TV series, but it has had more money spent on it, and that's the difference.
