Review of Great Expectations (2012) by Monica N — 11 Mar 2013
Ultimately, this film is a kind of tragedy; tragic because of the outcome for the main characters, and for the people who have to sit through it.
You'd expect better from a movie based on a Dickens novel, but we are instead served with a lukewarm try hard of a movie.
Helena Bonham-Carter steals the show as Miss Haversham, the reclusive women who forms a major part of the story; everyone else just seems to be going along for the ride, with little effort going in to their acting.
In terms of the visuals, the film once again demonstrates that British movies don't quite understand the purpose of daylight; the entire thing is way too gloomy, even in the brightest, happiest times in the film.
Don't waste your time.
