Review of Great Expectations (2012) by Brian Y — 06 May 2013
I hate to say this because I love this book and this is the 4th movie adaptation I have seen of Great Expectations, however it's my least favourite, despite an amazing cast .I enjoyed the cinematography of the gloomy English setting and the gritty street scenes of London .
I was impressed by how many subplots they were able to explore .I'm not sure if this version is going to be released in the North American market ,but I'd give it a miss and enjoy the memories of the 2011 Masterpiece version or the 90's version with Ioan Gruffudd.
I feel that the characters were not fleshed out enough ,perhaps because 2 hours is not long enough to portray this book on the screen . It's passable ,but not gripping. Ralph Fiennes is excellent as Abel Magwitch .
If you haven't read the book or seen any other adaptations ,you'll enjoy this movie .If you have ,you'll find it just passable. The finale is also quite a let down .
