Review of Great Expectations (2012) by Ethan H — 08 Nov 2013
This is a film I was interested in because I've read the book and have been fascinated with the time period. It has a Pride and Prejudice feel to it. The best thing about the film is the cast. Jeremy Irvine(PIP) and Holliday Grainger(Estella) are two great young leads and have marvelous chemistry, but Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, and Robbie Coltrane are the strongest performances and are very supportive.
Helena Bonham Carter's take on Miss Havisham is strong, scary, and crazy which is so her. It's her latest role she's played without Tim Burton or Johnny Depp by her side and she gives a terrific performance that's practically Oscar worthy.
Ralph Fiennes is also a strong supportive role and gives a scary, loving, fatherly well done performance. The costumes and scenery are well done and the story itself is averagely strong. Throughout times in the film I missed some stuff and didn't understand some of the things going on.
Overall though it's a fascinating film filled with many things. Not an outstanding film, but it's worth a trip to go see. My grade=87%(B+).
