Review of Great Expectations (1998) by David B — 14 Sep 2008
A very stylish Cliff Notes adaptation.
The plot is all there and Cuaron does some interesting things cinematically, but much of the heart (and heartbreak) seems to be missing.
Ms. Dinsmoor (aka Miss Havisham) isn't as coldly calculating & poisonous as she should be. Instead of a venomous spider spinning her web, she's more like a gadfly. She even leaves her home & travels to NY!
And what's with all the name changes? Is Pip renamed Finn, because he paints fish? Please tell me no.
Overall it's fine, but if you really want to appreciate "Great Expectations," watch the David Lean version. Or you could read the book (oh, yeah there's always that.).
