Review of Great Expectations (1998) by Philip H — 20 May 2010
This film was created, not to showcase the novel but the hot-ness of its actors. Yeah, those were the days when Ethan Hawke was Hollywood's go-to guy when they need someone to play the part of a sensitive guy; and when Gwyneth Paltrow was thought to be America's most talented actress, next to Julia, of course. But still, that was not enough to propel this adaptation into a classic. this version is more of a "now" thing, like St. Elmo's Fire: it was great the first time you watched it, but then you'd be scratching your head when you revisit it 10 years later.
Saving grace: If there are two things that this film did establish, it's:
#1. Alfonso Cuaron has talent.
#2. The soundtrack is timeless. I listened to it last Saturday and I am back to the 90's.
