Review of Great Expectations (1998) by Lizzy D — 22 Dec 2010
An unusual film in many respects, brimfull of potential and interesting cameos. Some references, some howlers.
Strange that RT's plot summary is so inaccurate - the Florida upbringing is anything but 'privileged' and the encounters in NewYork are each mirrors of images from childhood. That is the 'point' of the plot - so it must be the worst failing of the movie that such a clear and beautiful structure should get lost in the direction.
I take that back - the worst failing is the use of a narrator to spell out the plot to the viewer, just in case they can't keep up. I find that condescending (but if RT can't follow the plot, perhaps the producers have a case).
