Review of Greaser's Palace (1972) by Chuck B — 19 Oct 2008
Robert Downey Sr. directed this amazing take on biblical material, after his other somewhat popular yet wonderfully eccentric "Putney Swope" in 1969. Allen Arbus, probably most recognized as Major Sidney Freedman, a psychiatrist in the TV series M*A*S*H, plays the role of Christ as a Zoot-suited nomad on his way to Jerusalem to be "an actor-singer-dancer".
As he first appears in the film parachuting near a covered wagon in the old west, you know you're in for something special. This has midnight movie written all over it, and remains to this day one of my favorite films.
