Review of Grease 2 (1982) by Alex L — 28 Nov 2009
Quite possibly one of the worst movies ever. As a fan of Grease, the storyline in the sequel does a great dishonor for several reasons. Falling far from the days of American Bandstand, Rydell High's climax revolves around a school talent show filled with chintzy costumes - surely an attempt at following Frankie Avalon fantasy number from the original movie gone terribly wrong.
The makers of Grease were very conscious of the fact that they were fabricating over-the-top numbers, but were never insulting in their approach. The reason why it worked in the first film was because the story and actors were always true to its teen characters.
Grease 2 is quick to mock teen hyperbole going to the extreme of introducing a masked, bare-chested, motorcycle-straddling Zorro-type character... and do you think a real Pink Lady would let a T-Bird tell her that they own her jacket?! C'mon! Despite the movie being vomit-worthy, Michelle Pfeiffer still manages to be charming from time-to-time.
