Review of Grease (1978) by Sergiox V — 25 Dec 2013
Like most people, I went through a phase where I really loved Grease. But as an adult, the film does ware off on me every time I see it. First off, the film is possibly the biggest casting misfire in all of cinema.
The characters that play high school students are so obviously 25 and over that it distracts from any sensibility they are trying to portray. It's much more raunchy and adult when you watch it after some maturity, and really all of the adult parts are really just overgeneralizations of teenagers that critics and audiences alike will more than likely say is "a great inside look at youth" but I don't see it.
Lastly, I just don't like the songs with the exception of "Greased Lightning" and the theme song. Sandra Dee, hate it. Hopelessly Devoted, hate it. You're the One That I Want, hate it.
Summer Nights, good lord do I hate that song. It's the type of annoying song that is constantly oversung as a karaoke hit, and it just gets on my nerves. I guess the only thing I really like about it is it's 50's theme and like I said, a couple of passable tunes.
The rest really doesn't stick with me.
