Review of Gravity (2013) by Sam H — 21 Jul 2015
I usually have a distaste for completely digital CGI movies, but Gravity is the rare case for me. The film's visuals are extravagant and stunning, they consistently left my jaw dropping every second of the picture.
The cinematography is equally masterful with long, sweeping takes of gorgeous environments. Usually with CGI I find there is a loss of movie magic considering that you know it is all done with computers, but with this film I was constantly amazed and frequently asked myself "How did they do that?!?".
The performances are strong and the script is overall good enough. The problem with the picture lies in the character development. While Bullock's character has quite a powerful arch, Clooney's is left out in the open.
He has hardly any back story and is in the movie for a disappointing amount of time. The chemistry is there, but there isn't enough depth between the two of them. Overall, Gravity is a film worth the watch for its extraordinary visual effects and cinematography, powerful metaphors and story, but could be a turn off for those who value interesting and unique characters.
