Review of Grave Encounters (2011) by Jane D — 19 May 2014
Having a particular distaste for "found footage"/mockumentary style movies, I may not be a fair judge in reviewing this movie, but in saying that, this is possibly the only movie like that, that I don't hate.
The characters were all-around pompous and over-the-top which fit the genre nicely as none of the "film crew members" truly believed in the supernatural before they arrived at Collingwood. Towards the beginning there are mere hints that the asylum may be haunted, so most of the attention is thrown at watching each character unravel, one by one.
There is an all-around sense of doom hanging heavy in the air that adds to the atmosphere as things start happening. This is what separates movies like this one, or the Blair Witch Project, from those of the VHS or Paranormal Activity franchise, and that is perhaps why I like this movie so much.
It focuses less on the paranormal happenings, and focuses more on the absolute feeling of dread and ruin.
