Review of Grandma's Boy (2006) by Brandon V — 16 Oct 2009
The best jokes are tired and obvious strings of innuendos. The worst jokes don't even appear to be jokes; rather, they appear to be grotesque scenarios dreamed up by deranged sixth graders. One of the people I was watching this with informed me that I should "turn my brain off and enjoy it." Yes - even this film's defenders insist that you basically have to be in a coma to get any enjoyment out of it. That, or you have to be stoned to a cataclysmic degree.
Which is fine; I have nothing against the 420 myself. However, there are plenty of films to watch when stoned which also happen to have some inkling of artistic merit and originality, and which can be enjoyed by sober people as well. Fantasia? 2001: A Space Odyssey? Suspiria? I can think of so many better movies to accompany pot.
