Review of Grandma's Boy (2006) by Russell G — 25 Aug 2012
This is a surprisingly funny movie considering the cast is made up of a bunch of smaller name actors who just happen to be friends with Adam Sandler. Even though there are no comedic heavy weights in the cast, it works well by each character bringing something different to the table.
Doris Roberts really stands out as the naive but lovable Grandma and is a natural fit for her role. It is not too different from the role she plays on Everybody Loves Raymond. Allen Covert does fine in lead role, but he gets tons of help from Roberts as well as Nick Swardson, Joel David Moore, Kevin Nealon, Shirley Jones, Jonah Hill and a slew of other great supporting characters along the way.
The plot seems simple but all of the extreme characters, nerd humor and tons of quotable lines make it a cult classic. It is a decisively lowbrow comedy, but it is very funny and was right up my alley.
