Review of Grandma (2015) by Katherine M — 11 Sep 2015
Lily Tomlin remains one of the greatest actresses ever, so naturally compelling that every moment, every gesture seems perfect for her part. As the gruff, tough, feisty title character, she lets us in to see the vulnerabilities without losing a fearsome sense of independent thought and action.
Helping her granddaughter seek a solution to an unintended pregnancy, the film makes a simple quest into a grand musing on families, choices, and trying to be your better self. We need more stories about complicated women at every age.
Grandma is a film that doesn't condescend or insist on treating anger as simply cuddly curmudgeon. The rage is real, and having it is ok.
