Review of Grand Prix (1966) by Laragh K — 09 Jun 2007
This is a movie that anyone who enjoys modern car stunt sequences needs to see because this is what they all aspire to be. the cinematography was amazing and many of the shots could never be duplicated again.
I find it amusing that one of the camera rigs was on a GT40 of all cars! the race sequences are long and exciting. James Garner does a good job with his character but the movie lulls with the storyline that tries to hard to show the romance and mystique of the drivers of the time.
however, it is still important to the story of what was happening at that time. racing at that time was extremely dangerous. drivers that survived more than a few seasons were veterans. death was commonplace.
this movie is faithful to those concepts. Another interesting tidbit is that john frankenheimer got actual formula one drivers to do the driving sequences (although james garner did some of his own driving shots, and the insurance didnt cover that in case of an accident), some of the sound work was actually replicated on a straight piece of road and put in in post production.
This means that the formula one drivers that did that knew those courses amazingly well and were able to replicate the braking and accelerations from memory. that is a testament to the passion and skill of professional drivers.
Did I mention amazing car scenes?
