Review of Grand Prix (1966) by Ian C — 07 Nov 2007
An 'analogue' experience.
Grand Prix is a beautiful record of motor racing in the 1960s when cars were not festooned with digital technology, designed using drawing boards and machined by hand.
Similarly Grand Prix was produced entirely using optical techniques, directed by a maverick and shot for real.
Both subject and film have an element of real danger and realism and this is what this what gives Grand Prix its romance and charm today. An illustration of this is that the races in Grand Prix were shot alongside the real Grand Prix of the 1966 season and made use of the locations, cars and drivers taking part.
Slightly overworked ensemble plot is the only real flaw however, but this is easily offset by the races themselves.
