Review of Grand Hotel (2008) by Lisa C — 18 Apr 2008
Barrymore and Garbo positively light up the screen. This is when there were real movie stars. Why can't movies be more like this? That's why this was called the Golden Age, and it really was. A story with a murder and doomed love, a thief (Barrymore), re examines his ways when he spots the waning ballerina Garbo.
They fall in love at first sight, yes a little unbelievable but c'mon, it's Garbo and Barrymore. Relationships between the introduced ensemble become more clear and intertwined through the Barrymore character.
The results of this influences everyone in some way which leaves the ending as bittersweet and enduring.
