Review of Gracie (2007) by Laura W — 19 Oct 2007
This is a movie about how a girl had to fight discrimination to fulfil her dreams, which is to play soccer. nice enough premise, interesting possibilities, and a beautiful cast.
However, I was put in an incredulous mood from the start because her relationship with her brother, which was supposed to explain her drive, felt more like incest to me. and then her feeble and futile efforts at convincing people around her that she could "do it" only i) made the audience wish that she could have tried harder, ii) reinforced the unfortunate perception that pretty = useless. then the movie ended abruptly with her scoring one goal (like you couldn't see that coming...), with her grandiose achievement of "winning the right for girls everywhere to play" fleetingly explained by a few lines of text on the screen.
Great premise, awkward execution, and oh the political incorrectness is so cringe-inducing I don't think it resonates in this day and age.
