Review of Grace of Monaco (2014) by Ding C — 05 Dec 2014
On a basic level this was a fascinating combination of Hollywood glamour, world events, conspiracy and politics. I was truly glued to the screen like a paparazzi is to a celebrity, following every move that Princes Grace Kelly makes. But a biopic that portrays historical characters in an imagined situation, making it fictional is a contradiction in terms. And because this film did not have any spine to present reality as it was, being a biopic makes this endeavor such a sweet failure. Sweet because I enjoyed it, failure because it would have been nice if the story really did happen in history. It just did not posses some sort of conviction.
Nicole Kidman was born to play this part but did not quite measure up to the real Princess Grace. Tim Roth played Prince Ranier gave all the glory to Nicole leaving nothing for himself, except portraying the Prince as a father and as a politician.
