Review of Grace Is Gone (2007) by Kent P — 29 Aug 2008
I think that people who would be drawn to watch this movie about grief and loss may be looking for an anti-war movie. I don't think it was, though. Although the issue about Iraq is brought up, I felt that both sides were presented well -- and only because it was inevitable.
What the movie is really all about is above all the politics: It's a simple but deeply heartfelt story about how a father struggles to break the news to his daughters that their mother is gone. Cusack and O'Keefe delivered great performances that make you feel deeply for a dad who, on top of everything, is also trying to guide his daughter through puberty.
I found many scenes so tender as to move one to tears, not of sadness but of awe at the beauty of a father's deep love for his children. The drama is heartfelt and the ending emotionally satisfying, and as a date movie it should provoke much discussion afterwards.
Me, I just thought it was a sweet and beautiful story.
