Review of Grace Is Gone (2007) by Tim C — 07 Oct 2008
A very accomplished independent film that wears it's heart on it's sleeve - perhaps a little too much in fact. additionally, in spite of mining deep emotional veins it is a little light on substance and could have done with some more depth in it's characters and, quite possibly, some more accomplished tinkering with it's incredibly linear structure.
the script is pretty good, cusack is, as always, brilliant, and the kids are largely goog too, but there isn't quite enough to proceedings to pull it through into real greatness. one thing it doesn't do is preach, which is really great, but the growing sense of melodrama smothers the honesty to a point where you more or less know 20 minutes in where the film is going.
which is, obviously, a shame. worth a look though - especially for fans of JC.
