Review of Grace Is Gone (2007) by James P — 21 Jan 2011
I'm writing this review as this film progresses. It's about 18 minutes into it so far and at first I was a little put off by Cusack's acting; it seemed deliberate and, at times, changeable. I couldn't work out if he was just doing what he was told on set or if his character was extremely introverted, making a hugh effort to live in a world where everything is judged on positive, extroverted appearances. I also found the cinematography a bit jarring and fragmented but as events unfolded I realised that the whole production was mirroring aspects of the films themes and Cusack's characters torn emotional inner world. The actresses playing the daughters are excellent; it's hard to tell that they're acting - perfection. They ate able to portray the unique and complex human interactions, emotions and issues that the script demands.
40 minutes in now: This is one of those films that effortlessly holds your attention.
Finished: A delicate subject sensitively related.
A must see for all.
'The Dry Land' (if you're not too squeamish) and 'Brothers' also look at the effects of war at home and are definitely worth at watch.
