Review of Grabbers (2012) by Scott W — 04 Mar 2013
One of those rare horror films with an unimprovable premise: its pack of blood-sucking aliens are fatally allergic to human blood that contains a significant percentage of alcohol. Grabbers doesn't reinvent the horror wheel, but it rises above such quibbles with lovely coastal charm and lots of feck-fuelled laughs, although it's a near-irresistible Friday-night-out monster picture in the tradition of Lake Placid or Tremors, with a boozy Irish charm that makes it a distinctive addition to the catalogue of alien invasions.
Great cast, though, with Richard Coyle charming as the lead and a hit and miss chemistry with Ruth Bradley, who is still good but it's Russell Tovey who stills the film as the professor, who is just simply brilliant and funny.
The CGI is actually pretty good and importantly the film is really funny, with a lot of the gags quite original. The script is of course witty yet has a few flaws and the plot is just plain simple, think Tremors almost.
It's not scary though and was disappointed about some scenes which could've been better and maybe a tad gory to add to the scares but I was hooked as it was laugh-out-loud funny. Worth a look and not a bad attempt for a Irish comedy horror.
