Review of Grabbers (2012) by Marc B — 19 Nov 2013
This movie might not be the most unique monster film ever made, despite its premise, but it does provide an entertaining film with some absolutely beautiful visuals. If there's one thing that jumps out immediately is how good the film really looks and how it highlights one Ireland's beautiful islands.
Ireland is always a great setting to shoot a film, as it just adds life to a movie, and this one is no different. I think you could've gotten a lot more out of this concept than the film ended up getting.
Certainly, the whole movie revolves around Ciaran getting the entire village drunk, as a certain amount of alcohol in their blood level is toxic to the monsters, but it just doesn't feel like they did enough with this you know.
It would've been really cool if, when the entire village is at the pub, that they continued partying all night without ever being aware that there was an alien monster in town. That would've been hilarious, not necessarily unique, but hilarious nonetheless.
There's also this romance between the leads that feels completely out of place. The leads are great, and Ruth Bradley is hilarious here, but it feels completely out of place and it didn't really add anything to the movie.
I do think there's a good idea with Ciaran's alcoholism and the issues that led to him becoming one, but they don't really do much with it. It adds a little depth to the character, but not much and the movie still maintains its fun tone.
The special effects are also really good for a movie that doesn't really have a gigantic budget. This movie definitely doesn't look its budget, which is always good to me. While I may not have thought this film was great, it's a typical monster movie with a little twist in its plot that they don't much with, but this movie is a lot of fun regardless.
If you liked Attack the Block and Slither, then this is the movie for you.
