Review of Gozu (2003) by Mike D — 24 Nov 2007
Gozu is a fucked up movie. A yakuza underling is ordered to get rid of his boss. When he loses his dead body at a coffee shop, he finds some odd fellows to help him locate the dead boss. Among these are a yakuza wearing facepaint, a lactating old woman, and a minotaur.
This is a typical Takashi movie. It is weird as hell, but actionless until the very end. The last ten minutes will fuck you up. When I finish the movie I was like, "What the hell just happened?" He did the same thing with Dead or Alive. What a cracked out director! I love his movies. I expect a messed up and crazy ending, but he delivers so much more. He goes beyond my insane expectations.
One thing makes me uncomfortable about Takashi's movies is that he doesn't use a soundtrack. There is no music in his movies. As an American I expect music in the background. He doesn't give me what I expect in any situation. It makes it feel different from all other movies.
