This depiction of reality in Spain during the late 18th century could easily be mistaken for hell on Earth. For there could barely be a more revolting society as one in which religion is used as a weapon to mask the most inhumane of sins, where people openly enjoy in the killing and suffering of others, and a world in which innocence and beauty are the most futile and damning of traits. The film has succeeded in portraying a war-stricken and power-hungry world that is without hope but plenty of confusion.

However, the film fails somewhat in keeping itself in order, and almost could not help but lose its way amidst all the chaos. The only consistent light that shined throughout all the cruel darkness is the radiant performance given by Natalie Portman, whose character, whether in her right mind or otherwise, persistently strives at life, and for life, against all odds.

Bringing reality, religion, and perception altogether in such a manner can either be seen as a pretentious nightmare, or an intriguingly philosophical twist of a tale.
