Review of Goya's Ghosts (2006) by Rachel L — 09 Jun 2008
This really isn't what I thought it would be. It's barely about Goya, it's about the French Revolution and the Spanish Inquisition and the liberation of Spain. I thought it was kind of interesting, but I'm pretty indifferent towards this movie.
The acting was spectacular though. This is my first Javier Bardem movie and I will definitely watch more of them. Natalie Portman outdid herself as, really, three different people. When you see her acting like a zombie (and the fantastic makeup that made her LOOK like one) you know she has talent.
There were some plot things that bothered me (how/why would you be in love with the man who raped you...especially when you've been in jail for that long to sit and think about it over and over and plot your revenge, etc.
) and the ending was pretty freaky. I wanted to love it, but I'll have to settle for just thinking it was "only okay".
