Review of Goya's Ghosts (2006) by Jon G — 29 Jul 2008
A rare misfire from the Oscar winning team that brought you One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus, this is a misguided interpretation of the the painter Francisco Goya, his beautiful muse, a lecherous friar and their involvement with the Spanish Inquisition.
Like he did with Amadeus and Valmont, director Milos Forman presents a visually gorgeous and ornate world. However, so enamored with the aesthetics are Forman and his crew that the characterizations and performances are undercooked and the story becomes uninteresting.
