Review of Goya's Ghosts (2006) by Courtney B — 13 Aug 2008
A pretty fascinating story, but I might have been more interested in a documentary. the final image of the film is pretty compelling, as are a lot of the auto da fe images. I was kind of interested in the ways the film depicted the institutionalization of women (in inquisitor's prisons, in asylums, in prostitution and deportation) without spending a lot of energy on any female characters.
natalie portman's part is to be the inspirational beauty that no man can forget. much is done to her, but she does little. the film is a little too big to accomplish much.
