Review of Goya's Ghosts (2006) by Alyssa N — 02 Jul 2009
As dark and visually striking as Goya's own paintings, and with a powerful story to boot. I think the twisting and turning storyline is what draws you in, and the disturbing images and themes are what stay with you.
Natalie Portman and Javier Bardem's performances also add even more depth to already conflicted and multifaceted characters. However, there are so many engaging characters and subplots that trying to cram them all in, especially at the end, makes things a little messy.
But Milos Forman is one of the greatest directors working today, so even one of his weaker films is still a captivating and moving period piece worth viewing.
