Javier Bardem as Brother Lorenzo.

Natalie Portman as Ines, Alicia.

Stellan Skarsgard as Goya.

Randy Quaid as Carlos IV.

First of all, there is nothing romantic here. Why was this film being marketed as romantic? It is not about ghosts either I might add .This refers to Goya's conscience and his inability to protect his muse, Ines. It is 1792, and no one is safe from the clutches of the Spanish Inquisition. I truly appreciate Portman's portrayal as Ines , her interpretation of what going insane looks like completes with scraggly hair, sagging mouth and almost crazy. Well, 15 years of brutal torture in a filthy prison does that to you. Creepiness becomes Javier Bardem, he seem to excel in roles like that. He is an opportunistic devil here, a sinister soldier of the Spanish Inquisition. The good acting saves a lacklustre period drama.
