Review of Gotti (2018) by Tara O — 15 Sep 2018
'Gotti' is an interesting and captivating story that gets executed in a horribly awkward and confusing manner in this movie. There were 4 or 5 scenes that I had to go back and watch again because of how poorly they were done and how difficult it was to be able to tell what was actually going on.
There were inconsistencies all over the place; a scene taking place in a bar in the early 80s that was playing modern electronica rap. The timeline jumps back and forth several times and the only way to discern where you're at is by looking at Gotti's hair color.
It was difficult to stop yourself from being distracted by the flat, lackluster performances by some of the actors. The best part of this movie is John Travolta's portrayal of John Gotti. While it isn't anything groundbreaking or Oscar-worthy, it's refreshing and entertaining.
Travolta does a good job of keeping his performance appropriately contained, especially for a role that can easily be overacted and over the top. The story of 'Gotti' can be summarized in a single sentence; John Gotti was a tenacious criminal who quickly climbed up the mob ladder, became the boss of the Gambino family, and finally got indicted and sent to jail, where he spent the final years of his life before dying of cancer.
Overall, this movie screams "amateur" in every possible way and reads horribly on screen. The best movies are the ones that captivate you, suck you into the story, and make you forget that you're actually watching a movie.
'Gotti' makes you think about the actors performances and the poor overall production.
