Review of Gothika (2003) by Manny C — 10 Mar 2011
Halle Berry, as Dr. Miranda Grey, wakes up one day in her own psych ward as a patient. Terrible things ensue. Terrible things for the character that is, since Berry has it worse. Her role in this idiotic excuse for a thriller requires no real acting skill from the historic Oscar winner.
She screams more than she speaks, and when she is speaking, she's saddled with uber-clunky dialog from a convoluted script that ponders whether Berry's Dr. Grey killed her shrink husband (Charles S.
Dutton), or whether the real culprit is Dr. Pete (Robert Downey Jr., slumming) or Chloe (Penelope Cruz, wasted) her patient who's obsessed with all thing Satan. Or was it really the ghost of a dead raped girl? Director Mathieu Kassovitz doesn't seem like he cares much what the answer is, he seems more into the music from John Ottman.
'Not alone' is the message Dr. Grey keeps getting from the world of ghosts. Hopefully I'm not alone in my disgust for this movie.
