Review of Gothika (2003) by Adrian M — 10 Jan 2010
The name implies something Gothic, but this movie wasn't. There were no people wearing goth clothes, dressed all in black with pale white faces. There was no gothic architecture. Why it was called this is beyond me.
It also starred Halle Berry, who is often regarded as one of the sexiest black women alive. She often appears in movies basically as a sex symbol. While her acting skills are commendable, usually the focus is on her sexiness.
This movie takes a break from her typical role. Halle Berry is not remotely sexy in this movie. There is not one single moment of sex appeal, no sex scenes, nothing exciting at all, nowhere in the movie.
The plot is an exploration into insanity. A ghost seems to make Halle Berry's character, a psychiatrist, go crazy. One moment she sees a ghostly vision, the next moment she is in the psych ward. Her husband has been murdered. And it doesn't end there either. She keeps seeing this ghost, keeps attacking herself. Is it a voyage into insanity? What is causing all of this.
Thankfully, actually, it is not. In the end, she is shown to be very sane indeed. In the end, just like a great Sherlock Holmes presentation, in the end all is explained. In the end, it all makes sense.
The twists and turns in this movie, the plot twists and shocks are just incredible. Yes, it is a bit on the horrific side and yes it is a big thriller, perhaps more than what is really comfortable, but it certainly doesn't lack for plot.
Perhaps there are a few plot holes. Some bits of it don't really add up. Some bits need more explanation. Some bits perhaps need a leap of faith.
If you liked horror movies, or gory thrillers, then this is a good movie for you. It isn't the most gory, and it isn't the most thrilling, but it does have a lot of great twists.
Plot holes and a bit too much unnecessary gore really weaken this movie. Not for everyone, but it is reasonable just the same.
