Review of Gothic (1987) by Carmen Y — 29 Mar 2009
The tragic death of Natash Richardson recently made me go through my collection of DVD and VHS only to discover, this film is the only one I own that she was in (well, she was first and foremost a stage actress).
Its a typical Ken Russel film that is completely over-the-top and lurid. Gabriel Byrne is a great Lord Byron while Natasha Richardson is Mary Shelley. This is not the Lit 12 version of the night that Byron and his guests sat around telling ghost stories and Mary Shelley went on to write Frankenstein but a very different tale.
Russel then decided to actually film a real horror movie, THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM after he did this film about the genesis of a horror story.
