Review of Gosford Park (2001) by Danny G — 31 Jan 2010
Intricate, beautiful and complex, those are three words that can describe Gosford Park if I had to choose. Some may find it dull and pretentious, but I find it really entertaining. The script is simply brilliant, the story combines a murder mystery, comedy of manners and British class system commentary, examining the society, whether with the point of view of the upper class or downstairs (aka servants, valets, etc).
The ensemble cast is the best of the decade, Maggie Smith's performance is such a joy to watch ! And don't let me start to talk about the art decor and the set. At the end, it's more about the characters in it rather than the murder mystery itself which makes this movie a great behavioral and social politics study.
