Review of Gosford Park (2001) by Christine S — 16 Apr 2010

There are a lot of things I enjoyed about this movie, but I only enjoyed them in a curious observer's sort of way. I didn't feel very much invested in the characters, and I can't tell if that's how all Altman films are (because this is only my second one) or if it was just the nature of this movie.

I liked the theme of the blurring of the class line and the critique of the upper class's self-awareness. I liked the many twists and turns of the plot and the payoff at the end that solidfied the class theme.

I enjoyed the performances above all- funny and nuanced. It moved a little slowly at times, and, like I said, failed to engage me emotionally much if at all, except at the very end. Credit that to Altman- he nailed the emotional ending of a movie that was curiously emotionless.
