Review of Gosford Park (2001) by Jon W — 18 Dec 2010
A very sophisticated, smart twist on the murder mystery. Robert Altman is the perfect director in this wonderful story of a man who is murdered twice in the same night by two different people. You may not guess the conclusion, but the style of filmmaking is something that should last as long as movies last- the actors never knew whether they were on camera in a scene or not, but the camera is always slightly moving, so they had to stay in character at all times.
Maggie Smith is deadpan, Kristin Scott Thomas is a revelation, Helen Mirren is nothing short of extraordinary, Bob Balaban is perfectly cast, Clive Owen reaches new dimensions, Ryan Phillippe has a blast, and.
..well, just watch the damn thing!
