Review of Gosford Park (2001) by Nick R — 04 Jan 2013
A pleasantly surprising murder mystery that's less about the plot and more about the characters in it. This is one of the rare films that I think I almost might enjoy even more the second go through.
As Roger Ebert so eloquently stated in his review of the film: "After you know the destination, the journey is transformed." It's a testament to the screenwriter and editor that we're introduced to dozens of characters all in one fell swoop, and then we're meant to figure out their importance and backstory as the film goes on.
It can be off-putting at first, but once I got over that compulsion to know everything and let the film wash over I realized that I was in for a treat. This film is a real gem for those willing to play by its rules.
